Biography

Lewis H Redner was an American church musician and composer associated with nineteenth century Baptist hymnody. Born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania, he worked as a musician and served as organist at the Baptist Church of the Epiphany in Philadelphia. Redner composed hymn tunes and church music for congregational worship. He is best known for writing the melody known as St Louis, which is commonly paired with the Christmas hymn O Little Town of Bethlehem written by Phillips Brooks. The tune was first used in the church where Redner served as organist and later appeared in hymnals across Protestant denominations. His composition became a standard part of Christmas hymn traditions.
