Lynn M. Trapp

Biography

Lynn M. Trapp is an American organist, pianist, conductor, composer, arranger, and liturgist whose career has centered on church music, performance, and liturgical leadership. A native of Missouri, he earned a Bachelor of Music from Southern Illinois University, a master’s degree in music and liturgy from the University of Notre Dame, and a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Kansas after additional doctoral study at the Eastman School of Music. His organ teachers included Marianne Webb, Craig Cramer, James Higdon, and Michael Bauer.

Trapp has served churches and educational institutions as a director of worship and music, organist, conductor, teacher, and clinician. He spent many years at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Minneapolis and later became Director of Liturgy and Music at St. Joseph Church in Baltimore. His performance work has included recitals in major churches and cathedrals in the United States and Europe, and his choral leadership has included national liturgical events and international tours.

His compositions and arrangements are published by several major church-music publishers, including GIA Publications, Oxford University Press, MorningStar Music Publishers, Concordia, Selah, Oregon Catholic Press, and others. For the GIA setting of “When Jesus Came to Jordan,” Trapp wrote the refrain text and new music and arranged material based on a melody by Frits Mehrtens. That work illustrates his broader practice of creating practical choral and liturgical music for congregational worship.
