Matthias Claudius

Matthias Claudius was a German poet and journalist whose devotional poetry contributed to Christian hymnody. Born in Reinfeld in northern Germany, he studied theology and law before pursuing a career in journalism and literature. Claudius became known for his reflective and often spiritually themed poetry which expressed humility, trust in God, and appreciation for everyday life. One of his most enduring works is the hymn Wir pflugen und wir streuen, later translated into English as We Plow the Fields and Scatter. The hymn celebrates gratitude to God for the blessings of creation and the harvest. Although Claudius was not primarily a church musician, his writing resonated deeply with Christian devotional themes. His hymn remains widely sung during harvest festivals and services of thanksgiving.
