Biography
Michael Praetorius, born Michael Schultze in Creuzburg, was a German Lutheran organist, Kapellmeister, composer, and music theorist. The son of a Lutheran pastor, he studied at Frankfurt an der Oder and served there as an organist before entering the court of Duke Heinrich Julius at Wolfenbüttel. He became court Kapellmeister in 1604 and also worked through commissions and visits at other central German courts. His large sacred output served Lutheran worship while engaging newer Italian concerted styles.
Praetorius published more than a thousand works. His major collections include the nine-part Musae Sioniae, the dance anthology Terpsichore, and the three-volume Syntagma musicum. The last remains an indispensable source for early seventeenth-century instruments, notation, performance practice, and the theological place of music in Lutheran life.
His connection with From Nazareth is musical and indirect. PUER NOBIS NASCITUR was already a medieval melody, documented in a fifteenth-century Trier manuscript and reshaped in sixteenth-century sources. Praetorius included an influential form in Musae Sioniae VI in 1609. He therefore belongs to the tune's transmission and adaptation history, not to the authorship of Sangster's English poem or to the melody's medieval origin.
