Biography

Michael Wise (c. 1647–1687) was an English organist and composer associated with the Chapel Royal and major Anglican institutions of the Restoration period. He had been a chorister of the Chapel Royal and developed a career in church music during the reigns of Charles II and James II. His appointments included service at St George's Chapel, Windsor, Eton College, and Salisbury Cathedral, and he later became a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal.

Wise is best known for Anglican anthems and service music. His surviving works show the changing musical language of Restoration worship, combining older English church traditions with newer expressive styles. In hymnological sources the tune CONGLETON is attributed to him and has been used as an alternate setting for Horatius Bonar's “Here, O My Lord, I See Thee Face to Face.”

Because sources differ on the exact year of Wise's birth, it is safer to describe it approximately rather than assign a precise year. He died in Salisbury in 1687.
