Nicholaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

Nicholaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf was a German nobleman, Lutheran reformer, and Moravian church leader whose hymn writing and missionary leadership greatly influenced eighteenth century Protestant worship. Born in Dresden into an aristocratic family, he was educated in pietist institutions that emphasized personal devotion and missionary zeal. Zinzendorf later provided refuge on his estate for persecuted Moravian believers, helping establish the renewed Moravian Church community at Herrnhut. Under his leadership the Moravian movement became known for its missionary outreach and vibrant hymn singing. Zinzendorf wrote numerous hymns that expressed deep devotion to Christ and emphasized the believer personal relationship with the Savior. His hymns and spiritual leadership helped shape the devotional life of the Moravian Church and influenced evangelical movements across Europe and beyond. His legacy continues through the missionary and musical traditions of the Moravian community.
