Church of Denmark (Lutheran)

Biography

Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig was a Danish Lutheran pastor, theologian, poet, historian, educator, politician, and hymn writer whose work reshaped both Danish church life and popular education. Born at Udby in 1783, the son of a Lutheran pastor, he studied theology at the University of Copenhagen and was ordained in 1811. A public theological controversy in 1825 led to a libel conviction and long-running state censorship, restricting his public ministry until the censorship was lifted in 1837. He became pastor at Vartov Hospital in Copenhagen in 1839 and remained there for the rest of his active ministry.

During 1835-1836 Grundtvig prepared the first volume of Sang-Værk til den Danske Kirke, published in 1837. Built on the Rock originated in that project and was later revised in the 1850s. Its contrast between church buildings and the living congregation reflects Grundtvig's mature conviction that the church is created by the Holy Spirit through the living Word and gathered around baptism, the Lord's Supper, confession, and praise.

Grundtvig wrote or adapted a vast body of hymns and also became closely associated with the ideas that inspired the Danish folk high school movement. His influence reached theology, literature, education, national culture, and politics, making his hymns part of a much wider program of Christian and civic renewal.
