Biography
Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf was a German nobleman, church leader, and hymn writer who played a central role in the renewal of the Moravian Church in the eighteenth century. Born in Dresden, he was raised within the Lutheran tradition but became associated with the pietist movement. Zinzendorf provided refuge to a group of persecuted Moravian Christians on his estate at Herrnhut, where a vibrant religious community developed. He wrote numerous hymns that reflected the Moravian emphasis on personal devotion to Christ and missionary outreach. Some sources attribute hundreds of hymn texts to him, though the exact number remains debated among historians. Zinzendorf leadership helped inspire an international missionary movement and contributed significantly to the development of Moravian hymnody.
