Biography
Norm Jonkman (born 1944 in Paterson, New Jersey) is an American church musician and composer whose work entered the Christian Reformed Psalter Hymnal repertory in the 1980s. He studied music education at Calvin College and taught music at Christian schools in Massachusetts and New Jersey. He later worked in organ service in the Seattle area and directed church choirs.
Jonkman's hymn tunes include HOSEA and TRANSFIGURATION, both composed in 1984. TRANSFIGURATION was selected through a tune search conducted by the Psalter Hymnal Revision Committee for Brian Wren's text and appeared with it in the 1987 Psalter Hymnal. His writing for congregational song often uses clearly shaped melodic contours and rhythmic profiles designed to support the imagery and structure of the text.
