Biography
Peter Warwick Cutts (1937–2024) was an English composer, organist, teacher, and hymn-tune writer. Born in Birmingham, he studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was an organ scholar, and then studied theology at Mansfield College, Oxford. His career joined music education, church music, and congregational song. He taught in Yorkshire for many years, including at Bretton Hall College, before moving to the United States in 1989 to become Director of Music at Andover Newton Theological School.
Cutts wrote numerous hymn tunes and became particularly known for melodies such as BRIDEGROOM, BIRABUS, WYLDE GREEN, and SHILLINGFORD. His tunes range from direct congregational melodies to more distinctive twentieth-century settings shaped closely around the texts for which they were written. SHILLINGFORD, composed in 1962, became an important musical partner for Brian Wren's Transfiguration hymn and was later included in major British and North American hymnals. Cutts continued to contribute to church music as a composer, teacher, organist, and director of music until his retirement.
