Placide Cappeau

Placide Cappeau was a French poet and wine merchant born at Roquemaure in the Gard on October 25, 1808. Local historical records describe a childhood firearms accident that cost him part of his right arm and redirected him toward extended education; he later studied law in Paris before returning to the Rhône valley and working in the wine trade. His literary interests continued alongside business, and his later works included Le Château de Roquemaure and poems in French and Provençal.

Cappeau wrote the French Christmas poem commonly known by its opening Minuit, chrétiens. The exact date of the text is disputed. Roquemaure's municipal history connects the request for a Christmas song with parish work begun in 1843, while Gérard Cholvy's scholarly history reports Cappeau's later account that he composed it on December 3, 1847, during a journey between Mâcon and Dijon. Adolphe Adam supplied the music in 1847, and the song was sung at Roquemaure during the Christmas midnight service that year.

Cappeau's personal religious affiliation is difficult to summarize responsibly from the available evidence. Although the poem arose from a Catholic parish context, later accounts describe political and anticlerical views; this record therefore leaves denomination unset rather than assigning him a church identity.
