Biography
Ralph E Hudson was an American Methodist minister, composer, and gospel song editor associated with late nineteenth century revival hymnody. Born in Ohio, he served in Methodist pastoral ministry while also writing and publishing gospel songs. Hudson composed and arranged numerous hymn tunes and worked as an editor of gospel song collections used in revival meetings and church services. He is best known for composing the tune associated with the hymn At the Cross, based on a text by Isaac Watts that he adapted for gospel song use. Hudson work illustrates the adaptation of earlier hymn texts into the emerging gospel song style of the nineteenth century revival era.
