Biography

Richard Alan Henderson (born 1950) is a hymn writer and composer whose documented work belongs to the late twentieth-century gospel and congregational-song repertoire. Hymnary's indexing of Songs of Zion identifies him as the author and composer of “Move Me,” copyrighted in 1978 and published in that Abingdon Press collection in 1981. The same tune and text were later included in The United Methodist Hymnal (1989), where the song is classified among prayer responses, commitment, hope, and sanctifying and perfecting grace.

Henderson is also credited as composer of the 1979 song “If You Ask Him,” with a text by Nezela W. Kirtz, which likewise appeared in Songs of Zion. These documented credits show activity as both a text writer and a composer in church song during this period.

Reliable hymnological sources available for verification provide little additional biographical information. They support Henderson's 1950 birth year and his authorship and composition credits, but they do not establish his education, pastoral office, denominational membership, or later career. Those details are therefore left unstated rather than inferred from the hymnals in which his work appears.
