Richard Baxter

Richard Baxter was an English Puritan pastor, theologian, and devotional writer whose works influenced early Protestant hymnody and spiritual life. Born in Shropshire England, he was largely self educated and later became a respected preacher and pastor in the town of Kidderminster. Baxter was known for his pastoral dedication and efforts to promote Christian unity during a time of religious conflict in England. Although best remembered for his theological and devotional writings, several passages from his works were later adapted into hymn texts. His writings frequently emphasized repentance, holiness, and the hope of eternal life with God. One hymn associated with his writings is Ye Holy Angels Bright which celebrates heavenly praise and the worship of God. Baxter influence on Christian devotion extended far beyond his own era through his sermons, books, and adapted hymn texts.
