Richard Birch Hoyle

Richard Birch Hoyle was born at Cloughfold, Lancashire, England, on March 8, 1875. Raised in a Methodist setting, he trained for Baptist ministry at Regent’s Park College in London and served Baptist congregations in England and Scotland, including pastorates in Sudbury, Aberdeen, London, Belvedere, and later Kingston-upon-Thames. He also worked with the YMCA movement and edited its Red Triangle magazine.

Hoyle was a capable linguist and became known for translating continental European hymns into English. In 1923 he translated Edmond Budry’s French resurrection hymn for the World Student Christian Federation’s international hymnal Cantate Domino. The Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology dates that first edition to 1924, although some library and hymnal records describe it as circa 1925. Hoyle’s translation became the standard English form associated with Handel’s MACCABAEUS tune.

Beyond hymn translation, Hoyle engaged seriously with theology and was an early English interpreter of Karl Barth. From 1934 to 1936 he served as visiting professor of systematic theology at Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. He died in Wimbledon on December 14, 1939.
