Biography
Howard “Rusty” Edwards (born 1955) is an American Lutheran pastor, hymn writer, and composer whose texts and tunes have appeared in denominational hymnals and hymn collections in several countries. Born in Dixon, Illinois, he studied music and later completed a Master of Divinity at Luther Seminary in 1985. He was ordained that year and subsequently served Lutheran congregations in Illinois and Georgia.
Edwards has written both hymn texts and melodies, often combining biblical themes with direct, congregational language. His collections include The Yes of the Heart, Grateful Praise, As Sunshine to a Garden, Each Breath Every Heartbeat, Bidden, Unbidden, and Uncommon Mercy. His hymn writing has also included collaborations with other composers and writers, and his work has circulated across a wide range of Christian traditions.
For Gracia Grindal's Annunciation hymn, Edwards composed the tune ANNUNCIATION in 1983. The tune and text were copyrighted by Hope Publishing Company in 1984 and were later included together in major North American hymnals.
