Samuel Augustus Ward

Samuel Augustus Ward was an American organist, choirmaster, composer, and music teacher associated especially with Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. Major hymnological authorities generally give his life dates as 1848-1903, although some reference works and hymnals list 1847 as his birth year. He studied music with teachers in the New York area and became organist and choirmaster at Grace Church in 1880, remaining there until his death.

Ward composed the melody now called MATERNA in 1882 for the older Christian hymn O Mother Dear, Jerusalem. Grace Church records indicate that the tune circulated there in manuscript before publication. Its first located printing appeared in The Parish Choir on July 12, 1888, and it subsequently entered Episcopal and other hymnals. Ward also founded Newark’s Orpheus Club and participated actively in the city’s musical life.

Popular accounts sometimes describe Ward composing the melody during a ferry journey and writing it on a shirt cuff, but sources disagree about the details, so the anecdote should not be treated as firmly documented. Ward never collaborated with Katharine Lee Bates and died in 1903, before the pairing of MATERNA with America the Beautiful became established. His melody and Bates’s poem developed independently before publishers brought them together.
