Samuel Davies

Samuel Davies was an American Presbyterian minister, educator, and hymn writer who played a significant role in the Great Awakening in colonial America. Born in Delaware, he studied theology and became a powerful preacher associated with the evangelical revival movement. Davies served congregations in Virginia where he encouraged both evangelistic preaching and congregational singing. He wrote several hymn texts and also promoted the use of hymns in worship among Presbyterian churches. Later he became president of the College of New Jersey, now Princeton University, where he continued to influence both education and religious life. Davies hymns and preaching emphasized the authority of Scripture, personal conversion, and devotion to Christ. His contributions helped shape early American Protestant worship and the development of hymn singing within Presbyterian congregations.
