Biography

Samuel John Stone was an English priest of the Church of England, poet, and hymn writer. Born at Whitmore Rectory in Staffordshire, educated at Charterhouse and Pembroke College, Oxford, he was ordained in 1862 and served as curate at Windsor. There he wrote Lyra Fidelium, published in 1866 to help ordinary worshipers understand the Apostles' Creed; The Church's One Foundation was its hymn on the holy catholic church and the communion of saints. Stone later served at St. Paul's, Haggerston, where his ministry included practical care for poor and working women, and from 1890 at All Hallows, London Wall. Although he wrote many hymns and poems, this biblical confession of the church became his most enduring work.
