Samuel Sebastian Wesley

Samuel Sebastian Wesley was an English organist, composer, choirmaster, and reformer of Anglican church music. The son of composer Samuel Wesley and grandson of hymn writer Charles Wesley, he began as a Chapel Royal chorister and held major posts at Hereford, Exeter, Winchester, and Gloucester cathedrals and at Leeds Parish Church. He campaigned for better musical standards and working conditions in cathedral worship, notably in A Few Words on Cathedral Music and the Musical System of the Church. His anthems include Blessed Be the God and Father and Thou Wilt Keep Him in Perfect Peace. His 1864 tune AURELIA, first published with Jerusalem the Golden, became inseparably associated with Stone's hymn through the 1868 appendix to Hymns Ancient and Modern.
