Biography

Seth Sykes (1892–1950) was a Scottish evangelist, gospel-song writer, and mission organizer associated especially with Springburn, Glasgow. Before entering full-time evangelism, he worked for Glasgow Corporation Tramways as a conductor and motorman at Possilpark Depot. The Glasgow Story records that he also served as secretary of the Tramway Christian Association and was permitted to distribute Christian literature and Bibles while employed by the tramways. In 1929 he left that work to become a full-time evangelist.

Sykes traveled around Britain and abroad with his wife, Bessie, combining preaching, Bible storytelling, congregational singing, and illustrated presentations using lantern slides. Their ministry belongs to the practical evangelical culture of the early twentieth century, in which simple choruses and gospel songs were used alongside preaching to make Christian teaching memorable. Hymnary indexes dozens of texts under Seth’s name, including “Love, Wonderful Love” and a number of short testimony and salvation songs.

His songwriting style was direct rather than literary, emphasizing conversion, assurance, gratitude, and evangelistic appeal. The couple’s music ministry was collaborative: later hymnals often credit both Seth and Bessie as authors or composers, while earlier printings sometimes distinguish Seth more clearly as text writer and Bessie as musician. Seth died in 1950 after more than two decades of full-time evangelistic work. His legacy lies in the popular gospel-song tradition rather than formal denominational hymnody.
