Biography
Shōzō Koyama was a Japanese composer, church musician, and music educator. Born on October 3, 1930, he encountered Christian hymnody during his student years through family worship and was later baptized. He graduated from Kunitachi College of Music and taught at Tamagawa University before joining the faculty of Kunitachi College of Music, where he served as a professor from 1959 until 1995 and later became professor emeritus.
Koyama wrote music for Japanese Christian worship while pursuing a long academic career in music education. Among his documented hymn tunes are MIKOTOBA and COME TO ME. His setting of “Mikotoba o kudasai” was accepted for Sambika Dainihen in 1967 after revision at the request of the hymnal committee, and it became one of his most widely transmitted church compositions. Hymnological sources describe his approach as combining recognizable Western hymn harmonization with rhythmic, modal, and expressive features suited to the Japanese text. Koyama died in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture, in 2017.
