Biography
Stephen V. R. Ford (1835–1910) was an American author, editor, and composer associated with nineteenth-century Sunday-school music. Hymnological records place his birth in Greenville, New York, and his death in New York City. During the Civil War era he wrote songs that circulated among Union soldiers, and for part of his working life he was also engaged in business in Troy, New York.
Ford later produced religious and educational material for children and church use. His publications included Sunday-School Teaching and Melodies for Little People, a collection combining songs with recitations for Sunday schools, anniversaries, concerts, and home gatherings. That 1891 collection includes his own musical setting of "When, His salvation bringing."
His surviving work illustrates the close connection between hymnody, religious education, and children's music in late nineteenth-century American Protestant culture.
