Stuart K Hine

Stuart K Hine was a British missionary, translator, and hymn writer best known for his English adaptation of the hymn How Great Thou Art. Born in London, he became involved in missionary work in Eastern Europe where he encountered a Swedish hymn originally written by Carl Boberg. Hine translated and expanded the text into English while working among communities in Ukraine and other regions. His version eventually became widely known in evangelical worship throughout the twentieth century. Although the hymn has multiple historical layers of translation and adaptation, Hine English text played a major role in its global popularity. The hymn expresses awe at the majesty of God revealed in creation and redemption. Hine work helped bring the hymn into widespread use in English speaking churches.
