Thomas Binney

Thomas Binney was an English Congregational minister, preacher, and hymn writer whose works contributed to nineteenth century Protestant hymnody. Born in Newcastle upon Tyne England, he pursued theological training and later became pastor of the influential King's Weigh House Chapel in London. Binney gained recognition as a powerful preacher and social commentator who addressed moral and social issues of his time. In addition to preaching he wrote several hymns for congregational worship. His most famous hymn Eternal Light Eternal Light expresses reverence for the holiness and majesty of God while reflecting on human dependence upon divine grace. The hymn became widely included in Protestant hymnals and remains valued for its thoughtful theology and poetic language. Binney writings and sermons made him an important figure in Victorian era religious life.
