Biography

Thomas John Williams (1869–1944) was a Welsh hymn-tune composer, organist, choirmaster, and insurance worker. Born at Ynysmeudwy in Glamorgan, Wales, he grew up in a Baptist setting and was baptized at Adulam Baptist Chapel. He studied music with David Evans at Cardiff while pursuing employment outside professional music.

Williams served as organist and choirmaster at Zion Chapel and later at Calfaria Chapel in Llanelli. He wrote hymn tunes and anthems, but his enduring reputation rests especially on EBENEZER, also known as TON-Y-BOTEL. The tune was written in the 1890s, named for Ebenezer Chapel at Rhos, Pontardawe, and published in the Welsh periodical Yr Athraw before entering hymnals. It later appeared in the Baptist Book of Praise and became widely used with many English-language hymn texts.

Because EBENEZER is in 8.7.8.7 D meter, later hymnals have also paired it with modern texts written in that meter, including “Silence, Frenzied, Unclean Spirit.” That later pairing does not make Williams a collaborator with Thomas Troeger; it reflects the continuing reuse of a much older Welsh tune.
