Biography

Timothy Edward Kimbrough is an American Episcopal priest, teacher, composer, and scholar whose work joins liturgy, congregational music, and Anglican studies. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, he grew up in North Carolina, New Jersey, and West Germany. He earned both the B.A. and M.Div. from Duke University and later received a Certificate of Anglican Studies from the General Theological Seminary. Hymnal metadata identifies him as born in 1952.

Kimbrough has served congregations in North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Tennessee, South Africa, and the Philippines. He was dean of Christ Church Cathedral in Nashville in the Diocese of Tennessee before joining Duke Divinity School, where he became director of the Anglican Episcopal House of Studies and Jack and Barbara Bovender Professor of the Practice of Anglican Studies. His teaching particularly engages the Book of Common Prayer and canon law.

Music has remained an important part of Kimbrough's ministry and scholarship. Duke records his compositions in The United Methodist Hymnal, the Global Praise series, Psalms for Praise and Worship: A Complete Psalter, Sweet Singer: The Hymns of Charles Wesley, and A Theology of the Sacraments Interpreted by John and Charles Wesley. He also translated Teresa Berger's Theology in Hymns? for the Kingswood imprint of Abingdon Press. His career therefore spans parish ministry, theological education, liturgical scholarship, translation, and music written for Christian worship.
