Tobias Clausnitzer

Tobias Clausnitzer was a German Lutheran pastor, military chaplain, devotional writer, and hymn poet born at Thum in Saxony in 1619. After schooling in Freiberg and Breslau, he studied at Leipzig and received the master's degree in 1643. In 1644 he became chaplain to a Swedish regiment during the final years of the Thirty Years' War. He later preached a thanksgiving service at Weiden on January 1, 1649, after the Peace of Westphalia, and that same year became pastor there. He subsequently served as church councillor, district inspector, and superintendent, remaining in Weiden until his death in 1684.

Clausnitzer wrote sermons, devotional works, Latin poetry, and several hymns. Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier first appeared anonymously in the Altdorffisches Gesang-Büchlein of 1663 and was later attributed to him in seventeenth-century Nürnberg hymnals. Its three original stanzas form a prayer before the sermon: Christ is asked to gather the congregation around his Word, overcome the darkness of human understanding by the Spirit, and open hearts, mouths, and ears for faithful prayer and praise. Catherine Winkworth's 1858 English translation made the hymn widely accessible in English-speaking churches.
