Traditional Finnish Melody

The tune SUOMI is a traditional Finnish melody whose individual composer is not known. Hymnary identifies it as a Finnish folk melody and also records the older hymnal description “Finnish Cavalry March, Thirty Years’ War.” The exact date and original composer are not firmly established in the hymnological sources consulted, so it is safer to describe the melody as traditional rather than assign it to a named seventeenth-century composer.

SUOMI was already in English-language hymnals before Ernest F. McGregor’s text was paired with it. “Immanuel Hymnal” used the tune in 1929 with John Julian’s “O God of God! O Light of Light!,” and the 1934 “Psalter Hymnal” used it with a different text. “The Methodist Hymnal” of 1935 then printed McGregor’s 1932 hymn with SUOMI. Hymnary gives the tune’s meter as 8.8.8.8 D and classifies the melody itself as public domain.

The tune therefore has a history independent of McGregor’s hymn. Its firm rhythmic profile makes it effective for procession, but later hymnals also paired McGregor’s text with other music, including Joseph Barnby’s CANTATE DOMINO.
