Traditional Melody

Biography

The familiar DONA NOBIS PACEM round is a traditional melody whose individual composer and secure date of origin are not known. Hymnary.org catalogs it as a traditional canon of irregular meter and identifies Italy as its place of origin. Other modern sources and hymnals have offered different geographical or chronological descriptions, demonstrating that the melody’s early transmission is not firmly documented.

The tune is sometimes attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but reliable hymnological evidence does not establish Mozart as its composer. English-language hymnals generally identify the music simply as traditional. Its survival appears to belong to an oral and communal singing tradition rather than to a securely documented named composition. The melody is especially suited to canon singing, allowing successive groups to enter with the same musical material and create overlapping harmony. Modern composers and editors have produced numerous arrangements, but those arrangements should be distinguished from the underlying public-domain traditional melody.
