Biography

Valerius Herberger was a German Lutheran pastor, preacher, and hymn writer known for his devotion to Christ centered preaching and hymn writing. Born in Silesia, he studied theology and later served as pastor in the city of Fraustadt. Herberger lived during a period of political and religious conflict but remained committed to pastoral ministry and spiritual writing. He wrote several hymn texts that expressed trust in Christ and hope in salvation. One of his most famous hymns is Valet Will I Give to You which reflects the believer readiness to depart this life in faith and peace. The hymn later became widely used in Lutheran funeral and devotional services. Herberger writings and hymns emphasized the comfort found in Christ and helped strengthen the devotional life of Lutheran congregations.
