W. S. Marshall

Biography

W. S. Marshall is the name consistently attached in modern hymnals to the melody now known as BLESSED QUIETNESS, but reliable biographical information about him is extremely sparse. Hymnary identifies him as a composer of gospel tunes, while United Methodist hymnologist C. Michael Hawn notes that virtually nothing else about his life has been securely established.

The melody itself can be traced earlier than its association with Manie Payne Ferguson's text. Hawn reports that it appeared with the hymn Do You Hear the Savior Calling in a United Brethren publication, Songs of the Cross for the Sabbath-School, in 1876. Later hymnals reused the tune with Ferguson's words and gradually standardized the attribution to Marshall. Some publications spell out the name as William S. Marshall, but the stronger modern hymnological authorities retain the initials because the composer's identity has not been documented with confidence.

Marshall's historical importance therefore rests on the survival of the tune rather than on a recoverable biography. BLESSED QUIETNESS became one of the durable gospel-hymn melodies associated with Holiness, evangelical, African American, and Pentecostal worship.
