Walter Greatorex

1877 - 1949

Biography

Walter Greatorex was an English composer, organist, teacher, and school musician born in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, in 1877. His musical education began as a chorister at King’s College, Cambridge, and continued at St John’s College, Cambridge. He became an assistant music master at Uppingham School in 1900 and later moved to Gresham’s School at Holt, Norfolk, where he served for many years as director of music.

Greatorex’s best-known contribution to hymnody is the tune WOODLANDS, composed in 1916 and published in The Public School Hymn Book in 1919. The tune took its name from one of the houses at Gresham’s School and was originally printed with Henry Montagu Butler’s hymn “Lift Up Your Hearts!” It was later paired with a number of other texts and became especially prominent in twentieth-century British and international hymnals.

At Gresham’s, Greatorex worked during a period when the school fostered notable literary and musical talent; pupils included W. H. Auden and Benjamin Britten. Although his surviving hymn-tune output is small, WOODLANDS gave him an enduring place in English-language congregational music through its broad melodic line, strong rhythmic drive, and suitability for large-scale singing.
