Biography

Walter Kendall Stanton (1891–1978) was an English organist, composer, conductor, broadcaster, and music educator. Born at Dauntsey in Wiltshire, he was educated at the Salisbury Cathedral Choristers' School and later studied at Merton College, Oxford, where he was an organ scholar. He pursued advanced musical study and eventually received the Doctor of Music degree.

Stanton taught at several English schools and served as Director of Music at the University of Reading before becoming Director of Music for the BBC's Midland Region. His work included conducting, broadcasting, educational leadership, and the composition of sacred and secular music. The hymn tune SHERSTON, in 10.10.11.11 meter, was printed with Fred Kaan's “We Meet You, O Christ” in The Hymn Book of the Anglican Church of Canada and the United Church of Canada.
