Wenzel Müller

1759 - 1835

Biography

Wenzel Müller (1759–1835) was a Moravian-born composer and theatrical Kapellmeister who became a prolific figure in the musical life of Vienna and Prague. Born at Tyrnau in Moravia, he received early musical training and was associated with the circle of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf. He held conducting posts in Brünn, Vienna, and Prague and wrote hundreds of works, including operas and operettas as well as instrumental and sacred music.

A melody long circulated in hymnals under names such as MOZART or NOTTINGHAM and was traditionally attributed to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Current hymnological authority, citing twentieth-century Mozart scholarship, attributes the tune instead to Wenzel Müller.

Historical hymnals used this melody with "Ring Out, Wild Bells." Because the tune's older attribution is still visible in many books, the distinction matters: Müller, rather than Mozart, is the composer credited here for this documented alternate setting.
