William Augustine Ogden

William Augustine Ogden was an American composer, music educator, and gospel song writer who contributed significantly to the spread of revival hymnody during the nineteenth century. Born in Ohio, Ogden studied music and eventually became involved in teaching singing schools and composing gospel songs for church use. He traveled extensively as a music instructor and evangelistic singer, encouraging congregations to participate actively in worship through song. Ogden wrote numerous hymn tunes and gospel songs that were included in popular songbooks used in revival meetings and Sunday schools. His music was known for its clear melodies and accessible style that made it easy for congregations to learn. In addition to composing he helped edit several gospel song collections that circulated widely across the United States. Ogden work played an important role in shaping the musical culture of evangelical churches in the late nineteenth century.
