William Bradbury

William Bradbury was an American composer, church musician, and music publisher who played a major role in the development of nineteenth century gospel hymnody. Born in Maine, he studied music and later became active as a choir director and teacher. Bradbury moved to New York where he worked with church choirs and published hymn collections for use in congregations and Sunday schools. He composed several hymn tunes that became widely used in Christian worship. Among his most famous melodies are the tunes for Jesus Loves Me and He Leadeth Me. Bradbury also helped popularize the use of gospel songs in revival meetings and church services. Through his teaching, publishing, and composing he helped shape the musical style of American evangelical hymn singing during the nineteenth century.
