Biography
William Chatterton Dix was an English hymn writer and devotional poet associated with Anglican worship. Born in Bristol, England, he spent much of his adult life in Glasgow, where he worked as a marine insurance manager while writing hymns and sacred poetry. He wrote As with Gladness Men of Old for Epiphany, and the text was first published in his Hymns of Love and Joy in 1859. Dix is also remembered for What Child Is This and for hymn texts that connect biblical narrative with personal devotion.
