Biography

William F Sherwin was an American composer, music teacher, and gospel songwriter associated with nineteenth century church music education. Born in Massachusetts, he studied music and became involved in teaching singing schools and directing church music. Sherwin composed hymn tunes and gospel songs used in revival meetings and Sunday school gatherings. His melodies appeared in several hymn and song collections used in American Protestant churches. Sherwin also collaborated with other gospel song writers and editors in producing music for congregational singing. His work contributed to the development of gospel hymn traditions and music education in churches during the nineteenth century.
