William H Cummings

William H Cummings, commonly identified as William Hayman Cummings, was an English singer, organist, and music scholar associated with nineteenth century church music. Born in Sidbury England, he served as a chorister at St Paul Cathedral and later became a respected tenor singer and organist. Cummings is widely known for adapting a melody from Felix Mendelssohn Festgesang to the hymn text Hark the Herald Angels Sing. His arrangement helped establish the now familiar tune used in many hymnals. In addition to performing and composing, Cummings wrote about music history and served in leadership roles within musical institutions. His work influenced the development of Victorian church music.
