William Hammond

William Hammond was an English Anglican poet and hymn writer whose devotional texts were included in eighteenth century hymn collections. Born in Battle Sussex England, he was educated at Oxford and later devoted himself to literary and religious writing. Hammond composed several hymns and spiritual poems that reflected the evangelical spirituality of his time. His hymns often expressed themes of repentance, redemption, and gratitude for divine grace. One of his best known hymns is Lord We Come Before Thee Now which became widely used in Protestant worship services. The hymn expresses humility and dependence on God presence in worship. Hammond contributions added to the growing body of English hymnody during the evangelical revival and helped shape congregational worship in Anglican and other Protestant churches.
