Biography
William James “Bill” Gaither is an American gospel singer, songwriter, composer, producer, and music entrepreneur from Alexandria, Indiana. He grew up listening closely to Southern Gospel quartets and formed the Bill Gaither Trio while a college student. He graduated from Anderson College in 1959 with a major in English and a minor in music, then taught English while continuing to perform, compose, and publish music. In the early 1960s he also directed the choir at South Meridian Church of God in Anderson. He left teaching in 1967 to work full time in Christian music.
Bill and Gloria Gaither developed a collaborative songwriting practice in which Gloria often concentrated on words and Bill on musical composition, although many songs were jointly shaped. Their catalog includes He Touched Me, Because He Lives, Something Beautiful, The King Is Coming, and many other songs that entered recordings and denominational hymnals. Bill later founded the Gaither Vocal Band and, beginning in the 1990s, developed the Gaither Homecoming series, which brought together performers from several generations of gospel music.
For There's Something About That Name, hymnals credit both Bill and Gloria as text authors, while the tune THAT NAME is specifically credited to Bill Gaither and dated 1970.
