Biography
William James “Bill” Gaither was born in Alexandria, Indiana, on March 28, 1936. Raised in a farming family within the Church of God movement headquartered in Anderson, he studied piano and organ and developed an early enthusiasm for gospel quartets. He formed the Gaither Trio with his siblings while attending Anderson College, graduating in 1959 with a major in English and a minor in music. Gaither taught English while singing, composing, recording, and publishing part-time. After marrying Gloria Sickal in 1962, he found in her a lyricist whose literary gifts complemented his musical instincts. The couple left school teaching for full-time music work in 1967.
For Something Beautiful, Bill composed the melody called SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL; the role is consistently identified in hymnals, licensed music catalogs, and Hymnary’s tune authority. His other influential songs and tunes include He Touched Me, Because He Lives, The King Is Coming, and The Longer I Serve Him. Beyond the Bill Gaither Trio, he founded the Gaither Vocal Band and developed the Homecoming recordings and videos, which brought veteran and newer gospel performers together. Bill and Gloria’s catalogue exceeds seven hundred songs according to their official biographies. They were named ASCAP Christian Songwriters of the Century in 2000 and later entered the Gospel Music Hall of Fame. His importance lies not only in composition but also in publishing, performance, mentorship, and the preservation and presentation of Southern gospel traditions.
