William Jeater

Biography

William Jeater was an English church musician and hymn-tune composer born in 1858. Public biographical information about his life is limited, but hymnological sources consistently identify him with the tune ROSSETTI, composed in 1907 for Christina Rossetti's “None Other Lamb.” The tune was associated with Presbyterian hymnody and later appeared in collections such as the Trinity Hymnal.

ROSSETTI is in 8.10.10.4 meter and was written specifically to fit Rossetti's compact three-stanza text. The tune has remained one of the principal musical settings of the hymn and is the setting used in modern Reformed and Presbyterian collections. Because the available sources preserve more information about the tune than about Jeater's wider career, his biography is necessarily brief.
