Biography

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756–1791) was an Austrian composer whose work stands at the center of the Classical tradition. Born in Salzburg and trained by his father, Leopold Mozart, he displayed exceptional ability from childhood and traveled widely as a performer before establishing himself as a composer and pianist in Vienna.

Mozart wrote in nearly every major genre of his day, including symphonies, concertos, chamber music, keyboard works, operas, masses, and other sacred compositions. His mature works combine formal clarity, melodic invention, dramatic characterization, and sophisticated harmony. His church music reflects his upbringing and professional work within Roman Catholic Salzburg and later Vienna.

As with several other major Classical composers, melodies attributed to Mozart were later adapted for congregational hymnody. Nineteenth-century hymnals include a 7.6.7.6.D setting attributed to Mozart for John King's "When, His salvation bringing."
