Abraham Taiwo Olajide Olude

Methodist

Biography

Abraham Taiwo Olajide Olude was a Nigerian Methodist minister, composer, choir leader, and advocate for indigenous Yoruba church music. Hymnary’s current authority biography, based on information supplied by his son, gives his birth as July 16, 1908, at Abeokuta. He attended Ikereku Anglican Primary School and Agbeni Methodist School before entering Wesley College, Ibadan, in 1921. He completed ministerial training there and was ordained a Methodist minister in 1938.

Olude combined pastoral ministry with sustained musical work. He served in Methodist appointments in different parts of Nigeria and at one time chaired the Western Nigeria District of the Methodist Church. His aim was not simply to translate imported hymnody but to cultivate Christian song that worked naturally with Yoruba language, melodic patterns, and indigenous instruments. His publications included the MAYOKUN and IYE ati IYIN song collections, and his musical ministry involved choirs and touring ensembles that carried Christian teaching through locally grounded music.

His wider recognition included appointment as a Member of the Order of the Niger in 1965 and an honorary doctorate in music from the University of Ife in 1967. The same authority biography gives his death as May 30, 1980, and notes a posthumous Knighthood of Charles Wesley from the Methodist Church of Nigeria in 1992. An older Psalter Hymnal Handbook note reproduced on Hymnary lists 1968 as his death year, so the published secondary record is not entirely consistent.

Olude’s legacy is especially significant for the development of Yoruba sacred music and for the international transmission of African Christian song. His 1949 tune JESU A FE PADE, later called NIGERIA in some hymnals, is one example of that larger contribution.
