Carl Gustaf Boberg

Carl Gustaf Boberg was a Swedish preacher, poet, editor, and parliamentarian born at Mönsterås in 1859. After studying at the Mission Covenant school in Kristinehamn, he served as a preacher in the Swedish free-church movement and became closely identified with the Mission Covenant Church of Sweden. He later ministered in Stockholm congregations and served on the denomination’s governing board.

Boberg edited the Christian weekly “Sanningsvittnet” from 1890 to 1916 and used its publishing work to circulate sermons, poems, devotional writing, and songs. He also served in the upper chamber of the Swedish Riksdag from 1912 to 1931. His public career therefore joined free-church ministry, religious journalism, literature, and national politics.

In 1885 Boberg wrote the nine-stanza Swedish poem “O Store Gud.” It first appeared in “Mönsterås-Tidningen” on March 13, 1886, and was later printed with a Swedish melody. The popular account connecting the poem with a sudden storm near Mönsterås is repeated in later sources, but the most secure contemporary evidence establishes the date, place of publication, and Boberg’s authorship rather than every detail of the composition story. Boberg wrote other hymns and helped prepare Mission Covenant hymnals, but “O Store Gud” became his best-known contribution to hymnody.
