Carl Gustaf Boberg

Carl Gustaf Boberg (1859–1940) was a Swedish preacher, religious journalist, poet, and parliamentarian associated with the Mission Covenant movement. Born in Mönsterås, he worked at sea and in commerce and taught handicrafts before studying at the mission school in Kristinehamn from 1879 to 1882. He then served the mission congregation in his home town until 1889.

His move to Stockholm brought together preaching and publishing. He ministered at Florakyrkan and Immanuelskyrkan and edited Sanningsvittnet until 1916. The Swedish biographical dictionary dates his editorship from 1889, while some hymnological accounts give 1890. He acquired the newspaper in 1894. His work on the Mission Covenant governing and school boards, and on its hymnbook, placed him within the institutions shaping Swedish free-church life.

Boberg published poetry, devotional writing, and commentary on public affairs. His hymns include Jesus, Jesus, O det ordet and Min själ berömmer Gud med fröjd; O Store Gud became internationally influential through later translations and adaptations. These writings joined accessible religious expression with the literary and journalistic interests that marked his wider career.

He served in the Swedish Parliament's upper chamber from 1912 to 1931. Politically conservative, he addressed national and social questions as well as religious concerns. His career illustrates the participation of Swedish free-church leaders in public debate, education, literature, and representative government. He died in Kalmar in 1940.
