George William Warren

George William Warren (1828–1902) was an American organist and composer born in Albany, New York. He received his general education at Racine College in Wisconsin and was largely self-trained as a musician. Warren served as organist in several Episcopal churches and became especially identified with St. Thomas Church in New York City, where he played the organ from 1870 to 1900.

His church-music output included anthems, service music, and hymn tunes. A substantial group of his tunes was gathered in Warren's Hymns and Tunes as Sung in St. Thomas Church, published in 1888. His tune ALL IN ALL was later printed with Benjamin R. Hanby's "Who Is He in Yonder Stall" in The Church Hymnal of 1920. Warren's career represents the professional urban church-music tradition of late nineteenth-century America, in which organists frequently served as composers, choir leaders, and editors of congregational repertory.
