Gerhard Tersteegen

Gerhard Tersteegen was a German Reformed mystic, devotional writer, and hymn poet associated with pietist spirituality in the eighteenth century. Born in Moers Germany, he worked as a ribbon weaver while also pursuing religious study and devotional writing. Tersteegen became known for his emphasis on personal devotion, prayer, and spiritual contemplation. He wrote numerous hymns and religious poems that were widely circulated among Protestant pietist communities. One hymn associated with his writing is God Himself Is Present. His works were translated into several languages and influenced later Protestant devotional literature. Tersteegen writing reflects the pietist focus on inward spiritual life and personal relationship with God.
