Biography
Johannes Schmidlin (1722–1772) was a Swiss Reformed pastor and composer born in Zürich. He studied theology at the Collegium Carolinum and received musical instruction from Johann Caspar Bachofen. In 1754 he became pastor at Wetzikon, where music became an important part of his ministry and community work.
Schmidlin published Singendes und spielendes Vergnuegen reiner Andacht in 1752, a collection of sacred songs that went through several editions. His output included sacred songs, solo arias with devotional texts, and small cantatas. In 1769 he published Schweizerlieder mit Melodien, settings of patriotic poems by Johann Kaspar Lavater that became an important contribution to eighteenth-century Swiss song culture. The tune TIBERIAS, attributed to Schmidlin, was later arranged by Purcell J. Mansfield and used with "Who Is He in Yonder Stall" in Redemption Songs (1937).
